Kiri Inukai was born with the handicap of prosopagnosia, meaning she is unable to recognize human faces. In order to identify people and read their minds without looking at their faces, she makes use of her five senses, and this leads her to acquire an excellent memory. After graduating from university, she once followed in her late father's footsteps and became a police officer, but due to a series of blunders, including not being able to recognize the faces of criminals, she is now on leave and works at a second-hand bookstore surrounded by trees. One detective, unaware of Kiri's existence, visits the store looking for a bear ecology guide. The man's name is Hibiki Saruwatari, who was relieved of his duties and sent to an easier department, due to repeated excessive use of self-defense. Saruwatari asks Kiri if she would like to cooperate in the investigation of unsolved cases. Kiri is initially hesitant to accept Saruwatari's invitation. However, Kiri reflects on the fact that her father, Toshiro Inukai, who died in an accident eight years ago, was once a highly trusted detective at the Metropolitan Police Department. Persuaded by Saruwatari's witty and honest words, she begins to accompany him on investigations of unsolved cases with the goal of eventually returning to the police force.
